Friday Feature: Mathnasium

Uncategorized May 22, 2020

For this week’s Friday Feature, we’re proud to focus on one of the sponsors who has made it possible for VUSD students to access Odyssey’s emotional intelligence (EQ) curriculum. Join us for a one-on-one chit chat with Nita Arora, owner of Odyssey sponsor Mathnasium Oceanside.

What is Mathnasium Oceanside?

Mathnasium of Oceanside North is your neighborhood math-only learning center. We help kids in grades 1-12 understand math by teaching the way that makes sense to them. Mathnasium instructors use our unique assessment process to determine (with great accuracy) exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, we design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master. It doesn’t stop there – our encouraging instructors continually check progress along the way to make sure kids truly understand and retain the concepts we’ve taught. The results are transformative – kids will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress.

Why did you decide to promote student EQ growth through Odyssey?

Like with social emotional learning, we strive to build positive skills to help kids become independent and achieve their goals. Our unique teaching method not only helps students excel in math, but also creates a positive change in attitude and confidence that helps them to succeed. We wanted to sponsor Odyssey to play an even bigger role in children’s success.

With so many people struggling with stay home orders due to COVID-19, how is your business tackling things?

We have introduced a new service called Mathnasium @ Home that allows students to continue to get the same face-to-face Mathnasium instruction you find in the learning center — from anywhere there’s an internet connection. Our instructors work with students in real time either to work on their learning plan or homework help. Currently we are offering virtual real time math sessions. With no school till fall or later, we can help to reduce any backslide kids may have with their math skills. Kids often experience a backslide when school is out for the summer. If you add the impact from school closures due to COVID-19, some kids are at risk for scores going down a full grade level. We want to help kids catch up over the summer so they can get back on track and be confident in math once the new year starts.
